US F1 team(s)?

May 14th, 2009 Chris McNeill

I’ve been catching up on this years F1 season with this years Spanish Grand Prix, thanks to the ever-handy DVR.  A nice continuation of the season so far.  As much as I don’t like seeing veteran teams like Ferrari and Williams running towards the back of the field, I’m loving the new blood we have at the front.  Ross Brawn is, so far, the man this year.

I hear mention of the US F1 team perhaps being two teams rather than just one.  Exciting prospect!  Peter Windsor, who we should all recognize from his pre-race walks of the grid on SpeedTV race broadcasts, and Ken Anderson, former race and team engineer for Rick Mears in the 80’s, should hear in the next couple of months if their team will get a shot at the starting grid next year.  They are planning on having a car ready for testing before the end of 2009.

I’m not sure who the rumored second team may be, but I’d love to see some more drivers in the series, and more teams competing for the championship.

To top it off, their headquarters is in Charlotte, NC.  The heart of NASCAR country.  I know next time I fly out to see my folks, I’ll be looking to see if I can stop by their shop and get a tour, a photo op, a die-cast replica, some sweet Puma racing gear and anything else they’d like to toss my way.

I attended the last US Gran Prix as Indy, and was absolutely blown away.  Loads of fun at one of our nation’s best racing venues, the race unfortunately had a lower turnout that desired.  Most of the people I’ve chatted with in the US don’t even know what F1 Racing is, let alone who the teams and drivers are.  Considering that I get a little confused by the new rules that are put into effect every year, I doubt that the general public has a clear handle on things.

I’m going to do some legwork to gather more information on these teams and rumors, and will add some more info as I find it. In the mean time, I’ve added an RSS fead from formula1.com to the sidebar.
